Installation Q: I've never applied my own graphics before. How do I apply these new Etown graphics?
A: Thoroughly clean all surfaces of bike component to be covered. A common household window cleaner or rubbing alcohol should suffice. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly as well.
Sometimes it is handy to remove the seat when applying the shroud decal. This grants easier access to the contours of the shroud cover.
Once both the mounting surfaces and your hands are clean, avoid touching the mounting surface with your hands. The oils in your fingertips will negatively affect the adhesion process. This is a very important step.
Align graphic with any interior holes, this is usually easier and more precise than using the perimeter or leading edge. Align the graphx with the backing still on the graphx, make mental notes as to the proper placement of the edges.
We utilize a pressure- adhesion system when producing our high-quality vinyl graphx. Therefore, we recommend you spray or otherwise wet-down both the mounting surface of the bike and the adhesion surface of the graphx (after you remove paper backing). Try to hold the graphx with your thumb and forefinger, inside the outer edge of the sticker, NOT on the immediate edge of the sticker, lest your finger oils inhibit a seal being made around the parameter of the graphx.
Lightly place the graphic on the plastic. Do not push down on graphic until alignment is finalized. Gently slide the graphic to its proper alignment. The pressure-sensitive adhesive allows for the sliding and peeling of graphx to their correct placement.
Once you have the graphx where you feel they belong, and using the handy felt squeegee that we offer, begin applying pressure to graphic beginning at the center and moving outward to the edges, pressing out fluid and being careful to press out any bubbles, without moving the graphx itself out of place.
As you work the ridges and bubbles out of the graphx, it’s a good idea to enlist the help of your handy household blowdryer. Don’t go overboard with the heat, just hit the graphx with the blowdryer, and work it with the squeegee, in alteration. The heat from the blowdryer will help with the adhesion process.
Have patience! It’s not uncommon for a well-applied shroud piece to take up to a half an hour to apply!
A note should be made on the nature of tool used to work the bubbles and ridges. We offer a felt squeegee that we feel offers just the right amount of resistance yet is pliable and soft enough so as not to damage your graphx. The use of a plastic card or driver’s license is not advisable, although were a person to be gentle and patient enough, they could be rewarded with beautifully applied graphx.
As always, please feel free to call us or shoot us an email should you have questions that we have not covered between our FAQ and Installation sections.
